Harry Potter

Why did people stand outside various book shops/stores to wait for the new Harry Potter book to come out?

I mean come on! I went to Sainsburys the day after to get some stuff for breakfast, there it was, stacks of the things and not at ridiculously high prices either.

Supermarkets are villains for destroying communities and sucking the life out of people. However, it stops the need for anybody to do stupid things like forming a queue for an average book

Tottenham

OK, so Spurs are my club.

I have bought shirts, memberships, tickets and everything. So why oh why has it taken the club over two weeks to get some tickets to me (for a firendly) and this years membership pack?

The club I lvoe, great on the pitch, but the organisation and admin?!?!

Yahoo

So Yahoo aren't exactly the darling of the online media industry that they used to be. Newer entrants have made a real dent on Yahoo in the UK - the likes of Google, Facebook and even MSN.

Yahoo have a lot of work to do. What does seem refreshing is that they realise his and appear to be trying to address it and in the right way. The frustrating thing about Yahoo as an advertiser has always been the lack of flexibility and dynamism in its advertising models. Their PPC platform was primitive, a legacy of the Overture days. Thankfully this tie is turning with the roll-out of Panama inthe UK. It may just be a new AdCentre that is replicating the Google model, but for established brands and their partners/affiliates, that is exactly what has made Google such a credible media owner.

Panama still has some limitations, which Yahoo are aware of and seem keen to fix. The largets hole at the moment seems to be the ability to track 'assists' without implementing their tags They are keen to underake development however to enable their system to talk to the likes of Atlas and DoubleClick. With that in mind we could start seeing more advertisers use the channel more effectively and understanding the true benefit throughout the buying lifecycle.

Add to the more robust approach to search the genuine thrust to improve content, with the likes of new music channels and EuroSport - here's hoping Yahoo can really make strides in competing with Google. After all, MSN search doesn't seem to have made a dent.

Good places to get cash back and money saving tips

OK, so the beauty of affiliate schemes are they open the doors for small(er) publishers with niche offers to advertise and in turn monetise their web presence. Many people with blogs do it, but for me, that isn't really what a blog is about.

The best example of an affiliate doing something better is quidco. Go to http://www.quidco.com they pay you money for doing the things you may well have been doing anyway. For example they pay you to bid or list on eBay. They also pay you for taking out home insurance. To really make money on here, buy home and cotents seperately. You then get two lots of cashback.

There are others such as greasy palm, but quidco does it for me.

Martin Lewes is popularised with appearances on Jo Wiley show on BBC Radio 1 and on GMTV. He comes up with lots of tips for helpign get yourself out of debt, but best of all, he looks ino the marketing offers out there and tells you how you can make the most of them. I got a free Sony Walkman MP3 player thanks to Martin. His site (I think) is http://www.moneysavingexpert.com

By the way none of these are paid for links, so don't think I have double standards here

English Language - Texting - SMS - Youth Culture

So is the English Language being killed off by technology and modern dialect?

Well many commentators often remark that the English language has and always will be on a continual state of evolution. New words emerge an others vanish. This is fine, but with the advent of technology and SMS is our language under threat? SMS allows us to remove vowels, or only use vowels.

Cn u c me 2nite?

R u ther w8tng

Soz, whn u cmg out nxt?

What does that mean? Whilst I am no great writer myself. I do ry and use correct words and phrases.

The other major threat is youth culture (or is that Yuff Culture) All the ave-its and innits? It was bad when bad meant good. Wicked was great and wack meant bad. Nowadays it has gone even further sick means great apparently. Lets not forget the terms if you admire somebody "that bird is fit" or "that bloke is buff"

Anyway, suppose I will just have to keep up.

Or should I say

Ah well, spose i wil av 2 keep up

Safe geezer, av to play it cool and be sick innit

Or something along those lines

Tesco - Tescopoly

A friend in work has kindly lent me his copy of a fascinating read - Tescopoly.

It is a great read that identifies the methods and tactics employed by the monolith - Tesco - in striving to take over the UK retail grocery sector. Whilst there is nothing particularly raised in the book, it does bring home in a well presented way, some of the repurcussions of Tesco's dominance.

The impact it has had on towns and communities - creating the concept of clone towns. The impact it has had on farmers and food producers, the entire impact it has had on society as a whole, by censroing what titles get put on the magazine racks.

Perhaps one of the most frightening things the book has raised in the first few chapters is the loss of food types. As supermarkets limit the lines it sells, it gradually eliminates certain food types and companies. It states that 4 out of 10 different foods have been lost in the UK.

This really is a scarey thought.

Fortnightly bin collections

Why oh why do councils think it is acceptable to only collect bins once every fortnight?

I took some bags to the tip today - it hasn't been hot weather at all, but already the maggots are active.

God help us if we do get any hot weather!

The infestation of flies, maggots and possibly rats when the hot weather kicks in - surely its a health risk. Council's suggest that cities always have rat problems. Maybe so, but wy encourage it by having rubbish all over our streets. What do we pay council tax for?

PS - I hope we do get hot weather though

Shocking News

Just remembered, in amongst the comotion of flash flooding, lights cutting out and sewage smells in the office, some outrageous news hapenned today.

Spurs managed to sell Mido today, and got more than they paid for him into the bargain.

Thank you Birmingham City

Global Warming?

So whether you believe the scientists about global warming or not - one thing is for certain - the weather is really odd at the moment.

Although, the rain hasn't been as bad down south as in Hull and Sheffield. The entrance of the mecca that is Nationwide House was flooded today.

Some poor people had got their cars stranded in the flooding.

Thankfully I managed to get out a bit later by driving over some more shallow areas.

So where is summer?

Monkey sphere

Well a colleague enlightened me today on a concept that was new to me.

We were talking about social networking (as we are both on LinkedIn). We were both discussing how a number of people seem to collect contacts. Whilst it isn't a criticism, because everybody should use these sites/tools as suits them.

My colleague all of a sudden said have you heard of "monkey sphere"?

Obviously the fact that I mentioned at the start of this post that it was new to me, my immediate response was NO!

After last week he mentioned trunk monkey on YouTube, I wasn't too sure what this was going to turn out to be.

If you are unfamiliar monkey sphere is based on the number of people the human (or monkey) brain can physical cope with and count them as genuine people, entities or whatever. This number may surprise you, but the limit is 150. So as we look through LinkedIn and Myspace etc and we see people with 200+ contacts - it isn't physically possible for them to truly know that person.

Well thats if the monkeys are to be believed!

Here is an interesting article about the monkey sphere
