A friend in work has kindly lent me his copy of a fascinating read - Tescopoly.
It is a great read that identifies the methods and tactics employed by the monolith - Tesco - in striving to take over the UK retail grocery sector. Whilst there is nothing particularly raised in the book, it does bring home in a well presented way, some of the repurcussions of Tesco's dominance.
The impact it has had on towns and communities - creating the concept of clone towns. The impact it has had on farmers and food producers, the entire impact it has had on society as a whole, by censroing what titles get put on the magazine racks.
Perhaps one of the most frightening things the book has raised in the first few chapters is the loss of food types. As supermarkets limit the lines it sells, it gradually eliminates certain food types and companies. It states that 4 out of 10 different foods have been lost in the UK.
This really is a scarey thought.
